Most break-ins start at a door: the front door, the back door or the garage. A good home system covers every door up close, the driveway, and the paths around the house, with one or two cameras inside.

Where the cameras go

Spot Cameras Why
Front door 1 Packages, visitors and a clear face of anyone at the door. Mount it about 8 feet up, close to the door.
Back door 1 The door burglars use most, because nobody sees it from the street.
Driveway 1 panoramic Cars, the garage door and the street in one 180° view.
Sides of the house 1 per side Gates and windows people walk past to reach the back yard.
Inside 1 The main hallway or stairs every intruder must cross.

No cable to the camera spots?

Running network cable is the best choice, but not always possible. Silarius professional Wi-Fi cameras plug into an outdoor outlet and connect over Wi-Fi to the same recorder or to Silarius Cloud. The Site Planner asks about this and picks the right cameras for each spot.

Worth adding

  • Watch from your phone: live view and playback in the free app, wherever you are.
  • Off-site copy: Silarius Cloud from $6.99 per camera per month, so the video is safe even if someone takes the recorder.

Questions

How many security cameras does a house need?

A townhouse or small house usually needs 3 to 5 cameras; a larger house with a yard, 6 to 10. Start with every outside door and the driveway.

Where should I not put a camera at home?

Don’t point cameras into a neighbor’s windows or yard, and keep them out of bedrooms and bathrooms of guests or staff. Also avoid aiming straight at the sun or a bright streetlight.
